Have you heard of the free creature design program, Creatures of Amalthea? Graphic designer for Imagination International, Denise, shares why she's excited to experience this free online learning opportunity, designed by world-acclaimed creature designer, Terryl Whitlach.

Starting with the Foundation

These first section of the online course was a real eye-opener to me. It provided a comprehensive view of what I need to do in order to be a successful creature designer. The introduction raised important questions that I had never considered before:

  • Why does a creature look the way it does?
  • How does its environment contribute to its characteristics?
  • What real-world creatures can I look to for reference?
  • What is its scale?
  • How does its skeleton make a creature move?

These simple questions taught me that I had grossly underestimated what it takes to create a new lifeform, even if it’s imaginary. I see these lessons as an investment in my creative practice as a whole, and this curriculum is no joke. It teaches creature design on a professional level and I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me.

Thinking about starting your own journey into a new realm of creature design?
